No, our analysis is quite different. When we talk about a dog’s genetic ancestry, what we mean is the similarity between various portions of the dog’s DNA and the DNA of known breeds. For example, if we sequence the DNA of a labradoodle, we would expect to find approximately 50% Poodle DNA and 50% Labrador Retriever DNA. We know this by comparing the dog’s genome sequence with the sequences from lots of Poodles and lots of Labrador Retrievers. Human ancestry studies depend on the comparison of individual DNA sequences that have been uploaded to a shared database, which allows related individuals to find each other.
