Urine can be collected either by you or your veterinarian. In both cases, it is preferable for the urine to be free-catch by collecting the urine while your dog is peeing. If you are going to collect the urine, any clean container with a lid that can be tightly sealed will work for transportation to the veterinary clinic.
At the veterinary clinic, if your veterinarian can't collect urine through free-catch, they will be able to collect the urine by performing a cystocentesis. A cystocentesis involves the veterinarian collecting the urine by using a needle and syringe using an ultrasound to locate the bladder. This is a routine and safe procedure.
We understand that cystocentesis can sound very scary. Please know that we prefer a freshly voided sample. Additionally, if you or your veterinarian are unable to collect a free-catch sample, you may choose to skip that sample if you do not wish to have cystocentesis performed on your dog.
